SPD Parent Support

Any doc would look at my son in 5 seconds and tell us we needed meds. We were offended at first and tried everything but.. but ultimately we did go the medicine route. He's been on everything! Straterra made him overstimulated, chlonodine, vyvanse, Focolin, etc.. I have found that everyone has a different reaction to different medication and there are side effects, but it brings immediate relief. Because they also stunt growth in growing children, it was just a temporary solution, until we can continue to alter his diet and move to the all natural /no glutten/no casin diet that we hear so many great things about!!!

Are these meds for the SPD? And How do you go about finding the right Dr to treat with meds. My daughters pedoatrician doesnt want to do ANYTHING but refer her to someone else. The only meds we give her are melatonin to help her sleep. Thanks for all your help.
Hey Misty:
Many kids with SPD also have other things like ADHD. For SPD it really takes OT which you can and should learn by a trained therapist who works with kids with sensory issues. Sometimes OT is enough and the child doesn't NEED meds. SPD also can cause inattention. If your child has inattention and you've already changed her diet and added supplements for focus/brain.. and you're doing OT or exercise every AM, etc.. then meds can be effective but as you can see, not the WHOLE answer. A Psychiatrist is the person who administers meds and then after you've found a medicine that works, the pediatrician can take over the perscription from there.
thank you so much!! we talked with my daughters ot and play therapists and they all agree that they believe she has an underlying ADHD issue so we have an appt for the 9th!!! Wish me luck!! I am very into the diet changing as well so we are implementing that!!!! Thank you so much for your time you have no idea how much I apprechiate all you guys are doing here!!!
My brother has ADHD we are both kids of the 70's when everyone thought that some kids were just bad. I watched him fail again and again. I watched adults and teachers reject him because he was just too much. He was a real life Bart Simpson! A thrill seeker often getting himself into dangerous situations for fun. He believed he was dumb and gave up on dreaming of being somebody special. As a late bloomer he finally made it to college at 28. It was a miracle really he'd dropped out of high school and started using drugs, ran away from home and by this point my parents were done. While at college they offered a program and testing for ADHD. As a hunch my brother had himself tested, well he found he was ADHD, he also tested genius levels in language arts and had perceptual problems with #'s in math. He was not dumb. He has a chemical imbalance of the brain. All of his risky behaviors may have been due to his brain seeking dopamine getting high just to feel "normal". He's now 41 and teaches math to high risk 6th graders. He has a deep compassion for kids who struggle and he's an expert at building confidence.
We know better now and when my daughter started exhibiting the same sort of depression and giving up I saw in my brother it shocked me out of my denial. It was agony trying meds. again. We'd tried when she was in first grade before we knew she was Auditory Deffensive and had SPD. We also tried Strattera and it scared the hell out of me she became a zombie. But she was in pain emotionally unable to keep up with her class and having to work so hard for unpredictable results. We'd been through the OT program and it worked well for years but when she started going through puberty everything changed. I have celiac disease so she's already free of gluten because I can't have it in the house. So back to the Pediatrician/behavior specialist. After much fear and sleepless nights we have found the right med. She's still her silly self but the fog is cleared. Her teacher noticed immediately that she gave herself more time to figure out problems he said it was as if "The clouds parted!" She can now keep up in class and her grades are a better reflection of her ability, she's been honor-roll for 2yrs. now. I don't believe meds. are for every child but we adults and parents have to be more mindfull that ADHD isn't a just label or a cop-out. I love this web-site for that!
Hey Heather!
You mentioned that your daughter has auditory issues.. do you realize that Auditory processing issues also cause inattention? So does Sensory processing issues.. so medicine doesn't positively effect these things all of the way. Also.. most of the kids have more than just ONE issue.. so the meds MIGHT help a bit but not totally. It's really a trial and error thing.. and we have to just keep trying all of the different treatments until we unlock the right combination of what our child needs. I'm not done trying therapies.. and won't quit until he's HEALED! Glad meds worked for you.. they work some for us.. just not the total package.

It's great to hear from other families who are also going thru this process.. thanks for being a contributor!!! Mary
Hi Mary,
Oh goodness yes! You can't have a child with auditory deffesiveness as well as SPD and not see it affecting their attention. Especially at school. We could'nt figure out why she cried everyday for the first 2wks of 3rd grade until we had a meeting with the teacher. I sat in my daughter's seat for the meeting and realized that the air conditioner was behind her. It was the humming sounds that triggered the fight or flight response in my daughter. We moved her seat to the other side of the room and she never cried again, but we could'nt get the air conditioner OUT of the room. My point was that my daughter's journey is very fluid. Things have evolved and changed over the years mostly positively. But there came a point where I had to try something new because we had reached a crisis point. I think you can imagine that once the kids get a certain age my daughter is 12, they REALLY don't want to stand out from their peers. As much as I wanted her to, my daughter wasnt wearing her very discreet ear plugs in class and not using her fidgets. And when I brought it up to her she just wanted me to drop it. We continued her therapies at home to help her get through homework time. Putting her on meds. was a last resort for us and in hind sight I wished I had'nt let her struggle so long, the fact that it" MIGHT help a bit " was better than the status quo. My primary goal is for her to gain self awareness in learning coping skills to deal with her day to day. In our case the meds. helped her slow down. She was always quick to give up on a task, if a paragraph "looked" too long she could'nt even consider wanting to read it. In contrast when she takes her meds. she just reads it. In just reading it, it gave her a chance to due better on the test, therefore bringing up her grades. Now she believes she's as smart as we've been telling her because she can see progress. And for us there is nothing we want more for her.
Take Care!
Heather
Hi Mary,
I just wanted to share quickly that a great resource for gluten- free and even casien free recipes is glutenfreeda.com. As a person with food allergies I know how hard it is to find good recipes. I hope you enjoy this site as much as I do, it's very well done. They even have 30 min. recipes! My kids willingly eat just about everything I've tried and have never complained about the flavor.
Enjoy!
Heather
Hi Heather.. thanks for this resource.. I didn't know about it but am restarting this diet. It's nice to network with other moms.. it's a life saver and THANK YOU For your contribution! Mary
Now that we have been on the GFCF diet for over a year, I see how much our life has changed. This past Friday night, our son had cheese on a pizza and he had no ability to focus for the rest of the weekend! He was highly emotional, and over reacted to nearly everything.

My son was on the ADD meds for several years and his personality was flat. I would never recommend anyone to go on meds unless their child is a danger to himself, which my child was for quite some time by his impulsiveness. The side effects long term are not worth it to me or my husband.

But, it's an individual choice, and just make sure you check side effects and weigh the options!
My son is 4 almost 5. He is SPD/ADHD. The developmental doctor suggested we put him on medication. I turned it down as I altered his diet weeks ago hoping for a change in him. Plus we see a holistic doctor as well. Does anyone know the Long term effects of a 5 year old being on ADHD meds?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder by e-juven8.com

This condition is caused by an imbalanced body chemistry, and it is alarming that full pathological testing is not routinely ordered for children who show signs of the disorder. When ADHD is not treated properly, it can severely disrupt a child's education and the development of his social skills, causing life-long harmful effects.

More and more often, doctors are prescribing stimulant medications, such as Ritalin, as the only resort for treating ADHD. Interestingly, stimulants have a calming effect – instead of an energizing effect – on children (or adults) with this disorder. It improves their attention span and makes them less active. In fact, according to one child specialist at the University of London , stimulants improve attention and reduce activity in all people, regardless of whether they are hyperactive. But in the case of children (or adults) with ADHD, stimulants make this improvement to an even more noticeable degree.

But the quickly increasing trend of prescribing stimulants is of great concern to the E-JUVEN 8 team, because stimulating drugs only suppress some of the symptoms of the disorder. They do not correct the imbalanced body chemistry, which has created the problem. If medication is stopped, the symptoms promptly return, setting the stage for possible lifelong dependence on prescription drugs. And prolonged use of any powerful pharmaceutical is not good for the human body.

While prescription drugs may sometimes be appropriate and necessary in extreme cases of ADHD, there are growing reports of an epidemic rise in over-prescription and even hasty misdiagnoses of the disorder, with stimulants being given to children who don't actually have the condition. To make matters worse, many children who are on a stimulating drug, presumably for ADHD, are also being prescribed anti-depressants, such as Prozac, for complaints like eating disorders, bed-wetting, school phobias, and depression.

According to one new study, 30% of children taking an antidepressant are also taking a stimulant, with the two kinds of drugs having opposite effects on the child simultaneously. The E-JUVEN 8 program offers testing and training, so that families can find much safer interventions than a dependency on drugs.

Before allowing a doctor to put your child on a powerful pharmaceutical, contact E-JUVEN 8 about the most advanced testing available to determine the source of his or her attention deficiency, learning disorders, hyperactivity, or other behavioral problems. A simple urine test can provide our staff with exacting information about a child's brain chemistry.

Armed with this information we can design treatments that involve a corrected diet and highest-quality supplements. These will provide the balance of nutrients necessary for the brain to develop properly and for the neurotransmitters (the brain's chemical messengers) to help the entire body function well.

Here are several problems often associated with ADHD…problems which E-JUVEN 8 can correct.
