SPD Parent Support

My 4 yr odl son is a sensory seeker. He's been doing so much better this past month at school, but last week it all wet downhill! As soon as he gets ANY sinus issue he becomes aggressive! Hitting, shoving, kicking. The staff was quit upset last week and said it came out of no where! It always comes out of no where! I think his vestibular area doesn't register when he gets sinus problems! He's had many ear infections in the past too. We cut out dairy, he's on a strict organic, no dyes diet. He gets daily probiotics, Ester C, and DHA. He also goes to a chiroprator 2x per month. Annoyingly he still gets the sinus issues. I even give him Oil of oregano to keep any fungus away. I'm exhausted trying to fight the sinus issue! When he doesn't have this he is so much easier to manage! All the heavy lifting and bag of OT tricks work, but NOT when he's sick!!! They are thinking about putting tubes in! I'm torn about this! That area is so sensitive to begin with! We don't have an OT now, b/c he was doing well and we were doing his diet. Now I'm wondering if we should go back?! Any suggestions?????? I've been crying for 2 days now. We're back to isolating ourselves from others b/c his behavior has been so out of control. He even got in trouble at church for hitting today. I feel like we can't go anywhere again! My husband and I are exhausted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this is an old post, but we have had very similar issues. Our son is 8yrs old and each spring his meltdowns become increasingly worse. Even though the school could predict it was coming, their patience decreased annually. Our son also has the disadvantage of learning disabities and has fallen behind academicly. @ the end of the last school year with three weeks left they suggested he be home tudored because they stated they understood it was part of his "disability" but had no idea what his "disability" was. He is diagnosed with SPD, anxiety, and specific learning disabilities, yet his episodes seemed to come out of no where as far as they could tell. This is a long emotional process and my husband and I often feel isolated, alone and exhausted. One more piece to the puzzle always seems to be missing.
Hi Lancie:
After an incredibly stressful evening at home.. we PINPOINTED the cause of the MELT DOWNS... it's DAIRY!!! Try taking your child off of dairy.. we us coconut milk, veganaise for mayonaise which is YUMMY, we use smart balance for butter.. so we just substitute.. This has made a HUGE difference for us. WE had a gluten free but not DAIRY free pizza at Mellow Mushroom Friday night and my son has been out of it ever since.

it is WORTH it to be strict.. b/c the DAIRY FREE DIET WORKS!!!
Charlene.. how is your son doing?
You might want to try googling SINUS and GLUTEN. Maybe there is a link?
