'On ABC last night on the show ;Brothers and Sisters; they discuss in the episode Sensory Ingration. You can go to ABC's website, go to that show and download the episode and see it. It is near the end, if not this is what is mention....The science fair also proved educational for Justin, whose med school adviser recommended that he drop out because even if he managed to get off academic probation and graduate, he may never pass the boards and get to practice. Rebecca spotted an exhibit on senso…

My daughter is 4 and can't stand wearing underwear or socks. We've tried different styles and sizes of underwear even boys. Was wondering if anyone has the same problem and if they make seamless socks for children?

Hey All!
Of course all of us have heard of the No Glutten-No Casin diet.. but as I'm reading about it.. I'm SHOCKED that it's not more OUT THERE .. and that Doctors aren't up on this stuff..
According to the book, "Living Glutten Free for Dummies" by Danna Korn, the Human digestive systems can't handle wheat.. as much as we give it anyway. Cows- have 4 stomachs.. but us.. only 1 - and here is the list of things that happen to people who have a glutten sensitivity - or Celiac disease and are un…

Dear Parents,
I would like to send a message to our communities about the abuse that is still happening to our special needs individuals in general and how we must put an end to it. Most of this abuse is due to the fact that our educators are not properly trained and supervised. This is unacceptable and needs to change immediately.
I also would like to send a message about how many of our children that have been cheated out of a proper education. I would like to help educators to take a major…

Finally,we got our ot evaluationregarding the boys,I showed them to their current therapist, and she was surprised that they didn't use the sipt test, they used a mat test I think it was.I'm not sure the difference, but I'm glad that they'll be going to the clinic for therapy, and they'll finally each have their own therapists,so it should definitly be a big help to them. Not sure what this means for when school starts in the fall,as I haven't heard anything yet.I'm hoping this means they'll have a…

This is the start of the summer and my new job is to find a solution for our son's school issues.
This past year, he was in second grade. He did fine in his grades. He regularly did his homework. But he got sent out of the classroom nearly every day. The teachers knew he needed space to get himself together. He's making noises, talking out loud when it's supposed to be quiet and distracting the other kids.
Hearing that your child is causing so much disruption is stressful enough, but hearing t…

Hi All,
I thought some of you might have an interest in these sites or perhaps passing them along.
The first link is the website for the film, “Autistic-Like: Graham’s Story” -
http://www.autisticlike.com/ . The site and the trailer are beautiful and Erik Linthorst has done a wonderful job explaining what I have bumbled and stumbled around for years trying to do. I ordered the DVD yesterday. There are 3 versions of the DVD – home use,…

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN CHAMBER TREATMENT FOR AUTISM? A study of 56 U.S. children with autism finds those treated with oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber had greater improvements in overall functioning, social interaction, eye contact, and sensory awareness than did children in a control group. Researchers say this is the first controlled study to test the effects of hyperbaric treatment on children with autism. Children were treated in the chamber for 1 hour at a time – twice a day for 4 weeks -- but onl…

My son, a first grader in public school, has had a challenging year, at best. The teacher and support team did not understand or grasp the reality of what it means to be a child with SPD. I attempted to educate them, share resources, explain how to work with him, and daily I would get the negative reports. He was melting down at situations that seemed petty to teachers and staff, acting defiant, not completing his work, and having difficulty developing peer relationships.
I obtained a 504 plan…

Hi, I am a new member to the spdparent support group but have a son who is almost 17 years old. He is a sensory poster child. I am learning more about him each day and think I may have touched on some of the underlying reasons for his extreme sensory problems. I hope to solve these issues in the next several months and will report my findings but not until then. I am a strong believer in the over/under methylated child.

Hi Everyone!
I was curious if any parents (especially those whom have been through OT ) have been able to notice sensory issues in family members?
My mother has always related with my daughter when it comes to being hyper sensitive to touch. She recalls the knifing pain of having her hair brushed, always wearing long sleeves even on hot days. She loves to read but can't without falling asleep, so she munches very salty "alerting" snacks. She claims she runs to read so she does'nt get pudgy from…

I finally had to learn to let go. You know our SPD kids require so much! Hands on training, managing tight, predictable schedules, trouble-shooting, being calm and consistant, trying to look beyond temper tantrums to find the root causes, challenge them and encouraging them to do things that to be honest make them uncomfortable. All of this and then trying to stay on the school time table! We parents in our love and deep devotion to our kids happiness tap into parts of ourselves, our strength, o…

"Give a hug to a child/person with special needs/challenges. You will receive more love in return than you can shake a stick at! ;)" This is the post on my Twitter and facebook pages. It is a re-post is in honor of President Obama's major "foot in mouth" faux pas the other day.
"If you have a child with special needs, you understand the struggles that he/she must overcome. And, you also understand that, even though we try to mainstream them, they are not truly accepted by their peers.…

Yah.. no joke.. I actually know what each of those mean!!! And those of us who have been dealing with some of these "labels" for a long time probably are hearing the ADHD one the most.
The thing that I have found SO fascinating, by joining other ADHD sites or visiting the AUTISM sites, is that there are TONS and TONS and TONS of people who just accept the ADHD label and medicate their childs in the traditional model.
I am DEFINITELY in favor of medicine if it will help. We've all been on meds…

Well, folks. I gave it a shot and lost. It just wasn't in the cards...
The winning Tweet was:
"BrentSpiner#1 RT @joshwanamaker: @BrentSpiner STOP IT PLEASE MY BRAIN, OH GOD MY BRAIN!"
With Brent's 500th Tweet, @joshwanamaker chose to tell over 117,000 followers:
BrentSpiner RT @joshwanamaker: "It's a good Data die!"
So, I guess this is another example of how hard it is to get our message out. And, how amazing it is to see what messages actually do catch the attention of others…
