HYPERBARIC OXYGEN CHAMBER TREATMENT FOR AUTISM? A study of 56 U.S. children with autism finds those treated with oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber had greater improvements in overall functioning, social interaction, eye contact, and sensory awareness than did children in a control group. Researchers say this is the first controlled study to test the effects of hyperbaric treatment on children with autism. Children were treated in the chamber for 1 hour at a time – twice a day for 4 weeks -- but only the active treatment group received added oxygen.
