This is the start of the summer and my new job is to find a solution for our son's school issues.

This past year, he was in second grade. He did fine in his grades. He regularly did his homework. But he got sent out of the classroom nearly every day. The teachers knew he needed space to get himself together. He's making noises, talking out loud when it's supposed to be quiet and distracting the other kids.

Hearing that your child is causing so much disruption is stressful enough, but hearing that the other kids are starting to make fun of him for being sent out of the classroom every day, is disheartening.

For the past two days, I've heard about a new school for kids who are high functioning and on the Autism spectrum. It's The Parramore School in Winter Park, FL I met the owners father last night while socializing.. He told me it's about $17,000 a year. Ugh!

Today we start OT again for the theraputic listening program. Then after we've been in that we'll start Neurofeedback. I spoke with CARD yesterday, (The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities) and they recommend not doing more than one therapy at a time. )

My son has many friends at school but since he's a sensory seeker, he's constantly jumping on kids. They get a bit annoyed with that and now I've seen the kids manage him and make him commit to NOT wrestling with them before they get started playing. They're all totally cool with him now, but in a year? Will he stand out like a sore thumb? I don't know.. I just know that we have to keep going on the therapies, and see where we are in a few months. When school comes around, we'll have to figure out what to do.

it's all a mystery to me now!

Hey all.. thanks for the support and understanding! We have recently gotten involved with CARD - The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities in Central FL... and they're going to work with us to revise our IEP to add MOVEMENT breaks and they'll work with the teachers to give behavior tips, etc.. You have to have a diagnosis on "the spectrum" to get these services, but many behavior experts can write up something to deliver to the teachers. I've found our teachers to be wonderful.. they genuinely have the desire to work with and connect with all of the kids.. even the out of the box ones! I'm guessing well continue on wtih public school b/c it's only 4 blocks from our house and convenient and there are so many things we enjoy!

Will stay tuned! :) mary

I'm understanding where you are as well Mary.My twins are very different, yet also very similar. One is having way more trouble with the making friends and knowing about their space. He was kicked out of class the last day of class we had to bring him back for the graduation ceremony, and he was devistated that he missed the fun of the park day! I felt really bad for him,and when at the end the teacher made mention again that she agreed with me(NOW) that they will have trouble next year!AARRRGGGGHHH! I tried all winter & spring to get her to check in with the boys OT but she wouldn't. Anyway, they'll be starting at a new pedi devl clinic with individual OT's over the summer,so hope this will help, and that it will set them up for OT help in kindergarten as it is an all day program.

I so understand Mary. And, it is so hard to watch our kids have a difficult time in school and with their peers. Without a ton of money, the options are limited. Hopefully, the listening therapy and Neurofeedback will help him slow that engine of his down. Keep me (us) posted, especially on the Neurofeedback. I'd love to hear how it goes.

Many Blessings,

Craig
